In this episode, I chat with Dan Tricarico - AKA The Zen Teacher - about how he used his burnout as an opportunity to start inspiring other teachers to live a more Zen lifestyle. During this interview, we talk about how it’s sometimes difficult to create change in our environments, so it’s important to remember that we can look inwards and create the changes that we need to become BURNED-IN.

Dan Tricarico has been a high school English teacher for over twenty-five years and has also authored several books: The Zen Teacher:  Creating Focus, Simplicity, and Tranquility in the Classroom (DBC, Inc. 2015) and Sanctuaries: Self-Care Secrets for Stressed Out Teachers (DBC, Inc. 2018. In his spare time, he enjoys writing fiction, listening to music (especially Roots Rock and The Blues), reading mystery novels, staring out of windows, and watching movies.  One of his first loves is writing poetry, and he’s published many poems both in print and online.

In this episode you will:

  • Hear about Dan’s burnout story and how that inspired The Zen Teacher. (22:00)
  • Learn what pampered triggers are and how you can use them. (28:30)
  • Understand the power of focusing on just one thing. (30:00)
  • Hear about the books that Dan has published to help teachers. (34:35)

CALL TO ACTION: THINGS YOU CAN DO TOMORROW

  1. Give yourself permission to say “no” and to do what’s best for you.
  2. Determine what your pampered triggers are (things that make you feel good) and how can you spend more time with them
  3. Feeling like your calendar is too full? Empty it out and choose just one thing.  Choose to do something that renews you or even choose to do nothing and see where life takes you.
